Updated Accessibility Sign Features Wheelchair In Motion

Activists in the United States and Canada have been successful in pushing for an updated accessibility sign. This updated sign features the originally stationary wheelchair figure now in motion. The white figure still remains behind the blue background that is understood globally as a sign to mark that as an area that is accessible for an individual with a disability. These new signs illustrate that individuals with disabilities are able to move around, giving a more realistic image of disabled individuals capabilities. Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Center recently repainted the signs in its parking lots with the updated figure, as supporters agreed the change can lead to a positive shift in attitudes about disability. A similar updated accessibility sign has been included in Apple’s most recent update of emojis. Read more about the updated accessibility sign here
