Why Actors With Disabilities Need To Be Part Of The Diversity Discussion

Seinfeld actor Danny Woodburn discusses the sad fact that there is a lack of diversity in entertainment. He is not talking about racial diversity or sexual preference diversity, but diversity of differently abled individuals. People with disabilities make up 20% of the population, but only 2% of the entertainment industry. Woodburn believes that if more individuals with disabilities are showcased on television and film the stigma around disabilities will lessen. People will recognize the individual as a person rather than just a disability.  Another sad truth is that 95% of characters with disabilities are played by typically developing actors. This takes away from the authenticity of telling these stories. Woodburn hopes that a change in the way television and film see disabilities will lead to change in the way society sees disabilities.
